Should You Invest in a New Generator This Year?

Having a backup generator for your house is one of best kinds of “home insurance policies.” It will give you peace of mind that you’ll have sufficient power for your household in case of a long-term loss of power during the stormy seasons. This is especially important if there are people in your home who depend on electrically-powered medical equipment. Knowing that your home has protection is worth the cost of a generator, even if it never needs to turn on.

But you won’t have that peace of mind if you have an untrustworthy generator. Is it time to replace your old generator with a new one during the quieter time of the year?

Debating about installing a new generator

Generators are not inexpensive items, and you will need to balance seriously whether you should have an aging one replaced vs. continuing with repairs and regular maintenance. The best way to make the smart choice about this is to call on a generator installation professional. The technician can examine your system and figure out if it is worn down to the point that replacing it is a wiser idea. In some cases, an older system will need to consume more fuel (natural gas, liquid propane, diesel, etc.) when it turns on, which could make it prohibitively expensive to run in the case that it does need to come on.

Another factor to consider is how much the generator has needed to run in the past. If it has undergone a great deal of stress, it might be wiser to replace it. For every 24–48 hours of continuous use, a generator needs to have major maintenance done. If your generator puts in more work than this every year, you should consider a replacement after a few years.

For most generators that only run a small amount during the year—if at all—an annual maintenance check-up and some repairs should keep it in the best condition, and your technician can help you make the choice. But when you definitely want peace of mind and your old generator doesn’t offer that, it’s time for a replacement.
