Knowing Whether to Replace or Repair Your Thermostat

thermostat-service

In order to keep your air conditioner or heater running in top shape, it’s going to need the occasional HVAC services in Leawood, KS, such as repairs and maintenance from a professional. Eventually, it will get so old that it just needs to be replaced entirely.

As for the thermostat, it’s not quite the same story. Thermostats are simple devices with far fewer moving parts. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re impervious to the occasional repair issue.

In this post, we’ll explain when your thermostat might need repairs or when it might need a complete replacement.

It’s Time for Repairs

There are many occasions when your thermostat just might need some simple repairs. Some of them can be done by yourself, but others will need the help of a professional.

Replace the batteries

Programmable thermostats use batteries to store and memorize your programs. If that battery dies, you can expect the thermostat to stop functioning properly. If you’re having trouble replacing the batteries on your own, don’t be afraid to call in for some advice.

Dust and debris

If too much dust has collected behind the thermostat’s front panel, it can cause the sensor to read temperatures inaccurately. Even those who are diligent about keeping their home clean often forget that the thermostat needs dusting off, too.

Electrical problem

The thermostat itself might be fine. Rather, it’s the electrical work connected to the thermostat that’s having the issue. Unless the problem can be fixed by tightening the connection, call a professional for assistance—electricity is too dangerous for a DIY approach.

It’s Time for Replacement

Short of a thermostat that is completely dead or has broken due to blunt trauma, here are some good reasons for replacement.

Bad installation location

While it may or may not require a brand-new thermostat, your thermostat may have to be removed and reconfigured entirely if it was installed in the wrong spot. A thermostat installed too close to the kitchen, in direct sunlight, or in a cold hallway is not going to give an accurate reading.

It’s outdated

If your thermostat still has a slide or dial, lacks a digital display, or has no options for programming, then we would urge you to consider a replacement for the sake of your HVAC efficiency. A programmable thermostat is the minimum requirement for owning an efficient system. Anything less means that you won’t be able to keep tabs on your energy usage (unless you don’t mind monitoring the thermostat 24/7!).

You need new features

And if your programmable thermostat isn’t enough for you either, it might be time to upgrade to a smart or wireless thermostat. You might be aware that these devices have a seemingly overwhelming number of features, but once you learn how to use them, they’re effortless to operate and very convenient.

Be sure to speak with a professional before installation, however. It’s essential that you choose a thermostat that’s compatible with your HVAC system, otherwise you can void the warranties and cause serious damage.
